Would You Trust a Pilot to Fly You to a City that They'd Never Flown to Before?

My answer is, yes – of course. Pilots are trained to navigate and use their intellects, their wisdom, knowledge and understanding of the tools they have to get us to our destination safely. Everyone needs a pilot who can help us reach our goal.

In the same way, every company needs the skills, the intellect, and the leadership that an experienced IT individual can bring, regardless of their industry.

When I am rejected for an IT Leadership role simply because I have little experience in a particular industry, I am baffled by a few things:

1.     See above – IT Leadership is needed regardless of industry.

2.     Hire for cultural fit and smart leaders will navigate you to success.

3.     You can learn a lot by hiring IT people with experience in other industries because they bring a different and fresh perspective.

4.   I am trained to navigate previously unknown territory, just as a pilot is trained.

Whether looking at the experience of a pilot or the resume of an IT person, you can see how successful they’ve been in helping their clients reach their desired destinations. Find one that has been successful in every endeavor and you’ll know that you can count on that person to help your company reach yours.

Einstein said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” 

Pilots successfully fly to different and unknown destinations regularly because they are highly trained to do so. Experienced IT Leaders are trained to do the same. They can be a catalyst for positive change, regardless of the industry, while at the same time helping you reach your ultimate goals.

Good question. I hadn’t really thought about that. But you’re right, I trust that they know what they’re doing. Their training would dictate that they have the knowledge to get me there. If I were looking to hire an IT individual, I would look at their knowledge (schooling and degrees), their experience and, most importantly, their track record. Many people have the book knowledge, but do they have the wisdom to apply that book knowledge? That’s why I believe the track record is most important. If I can see successes, then I can know that the person I’m considering is creative, innovative and finds a way to reach the goals set forth.
